AMANDA JANE

Seven-Pocket Work Apron

One Size Fits SM through 3X

This tutorial is meant to be used with our pattern card Amanda Jane, which can be purchased HERE through Villa Rosa Designs.

The apron on the left is modeled on a size 6 dress form. The apron on the right is shown on a size 3X.

Have some fun with the Vertical Small Pocket and Horizontal Small Pocket. You will be making them out of some of the leftover fabric from the front and back of your apron, or maybe you have some other fun and funky pieces of fabric lying about. If you have a fairly large print, cut your piece so that individual elements or patterns are featured.

Large Front Pocket piece folded in half lengthwise and pressed.

Preparing small pocket pieces.

My 1/4" folds on the sides of the pockets are probably more like 3/16". I don't measure them, I just eyeball it. When I position the Small Pockets on the Large Front Pocket, I take into account that they might not be perfect.

Measure at top and bottom of Small Pockets before hemming in order to keep the pockets as straight as possible.

Here is an easy way to mark your stitching lines for the Large Front Pockets. Take Large Front Pocket piece with Small Pockets now attached, fold in half and press to mark your center point.

Open, then fold right side to center and press. In this instance, I turned the piece over so I could make sure I made my crease through the center of the Horizontal Small Pocket. I had cut the Horizontal Small Pocket so that the design had an obvious center line. I wanted to make sure that my stitching would go right through the center of the design.

Next, turn left side to center and press to make a nice crease. The creases will be the lines you follow when sewing the Large Front Pocket to the Apron Front.

Next, you'll be stitching your Large Front Pocket to the Apron Front. Thinking ahead to the next step, as you pin these pieces together, make sure you keep your pins well away from the 1/2" seam area along sides and bottom. This way you can keep the pins in place while you do the following step, which is sewing the Apron Front and Apron Back together. It's not totally necessary to leave the pins in, but it does help to keep everything in place nicely as you sew the Front and Back together.

As with the previous step, keep your pins well away from the 1/2" seam area. This way you can do your machine stitching without stopping to pull the pins out as you go along.

Sew side and bottom seams. Remove pins. Trim to 1/4" along edges. Trim corners.

Turn right side out and remove other set of pins.

Press seams flat neatly around edges at sides and along bottom.

Preparation and sewing of Waistband/Ties.

Leaving a small gap in the center between top and bottom will make the center crease neater and more crisp.

Your Waistband/Tie is now ready to attach to apron.
